Capital gain and loss means gain and loss on the sale of your asset and investment. For example you have bought the share of Bharti Airtel of Rs. 3682.59 and sold with Rs. 3022.73. At that time, you will capital loss of Rs. 659.86.

These are also two types

One is

Short term Capital Gain and Loss

If you buy any property or asset or investment and sold within one year, it will be short term capital gain and loss.

Long term Capital Gain and Loss

If you hold the asset or property or investment more than one year and sold and then profit and loss on its sale will be long term capital gain and loss.

Dividend will not include in it if you are calculating the capital gain and loss.

What is Total Capital Gain and Loss

If you have lots shares you buy and sold in specific financial year, you can calculate the total capital gain and loss. It may either capital gain or capital loss in one figure.
